Policies for personnel dealing with children

Teachers, volunteers, staff and any person involved in any project of Don Bosco in Cambodia, either permanent or temporary, must adhere to the policies (below) set up to protect the children.

  • Please announce your visit with the guard. In cases, you may be asked to provide an identification document. This includes people who have worked before in Don Bosco.
  • Don’t take photos or videos of children and students without authorization from the rector.
  • Taking pictures of children and youth without their knowledge in order to make fun of them is forbidden.
  • Do not take pictures of children and youth in the nude or situation affecting their privacy.
  • Children traveling in a Don Bosco car must always be with a responsible adult.
  • Adults should not pay special attention to a particular child or student.
  • Adults must not be alone with children inside rooms, cars or private areas. Meet children and students in public areas.
  • Adults should not make promises to children and students such as inviting them to their countries or sending special gifts.
  • Adults should not give money to children and students. If a child or student has a particular need, please refer to the Don Bosco Kep administration.
  • Don Bosco Kep requests police records from foreign volunteers or persons that will deal with children and students.
  • Child offenders or persons that have been convicted for child offenses are not authorized to approach children in Don Bosco Kep unless they present an extraordinary reference from a tribunal or police department stating that they are not a risk to children.
  • Persons that have been convicted of child offenses must not live within one kilometre of Don Bosco Kep or the nearby public school unless there is an extraordinary reference from a tribunal or police department stating that they are not a risk to children.
  • Don Bosco Kep reserves the right to request to authorities that a person with child offence record should move farther from Don Bosco Kep.
  • Adults must not court Don Bosco Kep students, even if they are older than 18, or keep special relations that can be understood as a love relationship. Foreign volunteers saying that a particular student is their girlfriend or boyfriend will be dismissed.
  • Adults courting children is strictly prohibited in Don Bosco Kep. In a very suspicious case, it is our duty to report to authorities where children may be victim of any sort of abuse by an adult.
  • Adults working in Don Bosco as teachers, volunteers or administration are required to follow this Child Protection Policy and this includes the protection of any child related or not with the school.
  • Nobody is authorized to use the Internet of Don Bosco Kep to open pornographic sites. It is strictly forbidden to use the Internet to court children or to use material that represents child nudity or any online action that represents an offence against children. In a very serious case, it is our duty to report to authorities.
  • Adults related with Don Bosco Kep do not engage in prostitution activities, especially if such activities involve underage persons.
  • The Don Rua Youth Hostel is for persons aged 18 – 35 years old. Groups of underage persons must have an adult leader and due authorizations from parents and tutors. Adults renting a room in the hostel with children must prove lawful permissions for sharing with the children. Unregistered persons coming inside the hostel are not allowed. In any serious case involving children, it is our duty to report to authorities.
  • Adults must have a lawful authorization from Don Bosco Kep administration in order to bring children and students out of the school for special activities, even if students are older than 18.
  • Parents cannot remove children or youth from the school without notifying the school authorities.
  • Guards will not allow parents to remove children and youth from the school without authorization. The fact that they are parents does not give them this authority without notifying the school authorities.
  • It is strictly forbidden to use physical violence against children and students related or not to Don Bosco Kep. Adults using violence against children and students can be dismissed or reported. This includes psychological bullying, humiliation, shouting or anything that puts children and students in distress.
  • Teachers and adults are responsible for looking after children and youth at all times.
  • If a child or a young person has discipline difficulties, it does not excuse any teacher from doing their work of caring and assisting that child or young person all the time.
  • Adults must not touch children and students in a way it can be understood as harassment, either in public or private.
  • Places reserved for gender separation must be strictly respected, males must not enter female areas, females must not enter male areas. Exceptions must be lawfully justified.
  • Boundaries of respect between children and youth must be respected. Youth should not discriminate against children for any reason. The school will provide information to youth on how to respect and care for children.
  • Don Bosco Kep educators must work closely with children and students to prevent bullying inside the school. Children or students that are victims of bullying must be assisted at all times. Students or children that bully others must be assisted also to change their behaviour.
  • It is strictly forbidden to bring drugs, cigarettes, guns or explosives within the Don Bosco Kep School. Drug users cannot apply as educators in Don Bosco Cambodia.
  • Don Bosco Kep is a non-smoking area.
  • Adults must not invite children and students to drink alcohol under any circumstances.
  • Adults must dress in a proper way and respect Cambodian culture. Please do not dress in a way that could be seen as arousal to students. Be aware of cultural norms, what is seen as normal in your country can be a scandal in this one.
  • Children and youth should be assisted when they cross the National Road 33A between the schools.
  • Vehicles crossing the National Road 33A must reduce their speed when going between the schools.
  • The maximum speed within the Don Bosco Campus is 15 kilometres per hour.
